Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin has once again achieved outstanding success in the "Clinical and Health" section of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2024. Ranked 27th out of a total of 1,059 participating universities, Charité confirms its excellent position in a global comparison of medical faculties and maintains its top position in Germany. The renowned THE ranking list is considered one of the most authoritative international comparisons in higher education.
For the second time in a row, Charité is ranked among the top 30 institutions worldwide. As the joint medical school of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, it shares 27th place with the University of California in San Diego (USA) and ranks ahead of renowned universities such as the University of Tokyo (Japan) and New York University (USA). Within the EU, it is second only to the Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
Particularly noteworthy is the impressive performance of Berlin University Medicine in the areas of research quality and industry (revenues and patents). The Charité has also significantly strengthened its international orientation. For the third time in a row, Charité leads the 26 participating German universities, followed by the University of Heidelberg (35th), LMU Munich (50th) and TU Munich (65th).
Prof. Dr. Joachim Spranger, Dean of the Charité, commented on the success: "Such an outstanding ranking in Germany and worldwide reflects the outstanding strength of Charité in research and teaching. This extraordinary success is the achievement of numerous employees who actively contribute to, communicate, and otherwise support science at Berlin University Medicine. I would like to congratulate them and express my sincere thanks.
The THE World University Subject Rankings 2024 continue to be dominated by universities from the United Kingdom and the United States. As part of the European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA) and the M8 Alliance, Charité maintains strategic partnerships with several top 20 university hospitals. These include the University of Oxford (1st place), King's College London (13th place), the Karolinska Institute and the University of Singapore (both 16th place).
In the interdisciplinary THE World University Ranking 2023, Charité achieved 94th place out of 1,904 full universities, which means 7th place out of 52 participating universities in a national comparison. Charité's three partner institutions in the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) are also among the top 15 German universities: Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (4th place), Freie Universität Berlin (9th place) and Technische Universität Berlin (13th place).
The London-based Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking provides a global performance overview that annually assesses research-intensive universities in the core areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The rankings are based on 18 calibrated performance indicators divided into five areas: Teaching (learning environment), Research Environment (volume, income and reputation), Research Quality (citation impact, research strength, excellence and impact), International Orientation (staff, students and research) and Industry (revenues and patents). In this ranking, Charité is evaluated as a full university with only one field of activity ("Health"), since THE cannot reflect the special situation of Charité as a medical faculty of HU Berlin and FU Berlin. In addition to the overall evaluation across disciplines, THE also publishes the ranking for individual departments, with the weighting of the performance indicators adjusted accordingly. In the "Clinical and Health" area, medicine, dentistry and other health-related subjects are included in the evaluation.
