BER expansion program: FBB builds new apron area
The Berlin airport operator runs an expansion program for the apron area which is scheduled to be finalized by the end of 2021.
Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is investing almost 50 million euros in new apron areas. 15 overnight parking stands for Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 aircraft will be created with the construction of the new E2 apron level with the tower.
The general contractor for the 40-centimeter thick concrete surface is STRABAG Großprojekte GmbH. A total of 86,000 square meters of apron area and two large snow dump areas of 5,000 square meters at the northern and southern ends are being built. A pressure main for waste water and a central soil filter will also be built as part of the project. The related rainwater pumping stations will also be adapted to the new requirements in this step. The construction measures should be completed at the end of 2021.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Aprons are the most important resource for any airport. At Tegel, we suffered for a long time from the insufficient number of parking positions. BER will finally rectify this shortage. Air traffic will return to normal in the next few years. BER will also make an important contribution to the economic recovery of the entire region. It is therefore important to pave the way for the future of the metropolitan region now by expanding apron E2.”
