Amazon will open a new sortation center in Schönefeld, Brandenburg, which will initially create around 100 jobs by the end of the year. This was announced by the online mail order company during the topping-out ceremony on May 14, 2019. The new 34,000 square meters sortation center will deliver parcels from Amazon’s European logistics network and sort them by postal code before shipping them to distribution centers for shipment to the customer.

“We look forward to creating new jobs in Schönefeld to expand our mid-mile logistics network. The sortation center will play an important role in enabling the fast and reliable delivery that Amazon customers know and value,” said Andreas Marschner, VP of EU Transportation Services at Amazon, adding: “We would like to thank everyone in and around Schönefeld for their support!”

“The settlement of logistics is a decisive factor for the future success of BER: The settlement of companies such as Amazon is important so that the necessary logistics infrastructure can form around the airport. In addition, Amazon is an important source of inspiration for the economy through its innovations and not only creates jobs for shipping employees, but also in the technical and development sector,” says Dr. med. Udo Haase, mayor of the municipality of Schönefeld.

“As builders, May & Co. and Pflugfelder are celebrating the topping-out ceremony in accordance with tradition today together with Amazon and the municipality of Schönefeld,” said Maximilian May, CEO of May & Co. “We would like to thank everyone involved in the project for the planned completion of the shell construction and the tenant Amazon for their trust, the municipality of Schönefeld for the excellent support, and the permit authority for their straightforward cooperation.”

Jürgen Pflugfelder, Managing Partner of the Pflugfelder Group commented on the new development: “The Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area is growing. With the LOG Park Berlin Schönefeld, we want to provide service, industrial, and logistics companies in the vicinity of the airport with modern real estate for efficient processes and also serve the needs of the population. The 37 hectare property will provide companies in search of a new location with an additional 100,000 square meters of new space.”
