Deutsche Post DHL Group is continuously investing in its parcel network and started building a new mega-parcel center in the Brandenburg town of Ludwigsfelde in spring 2019. The hall and the outside of the campus were completed at the end of May 2020. In the next step, the innovative sorting technology that can process up to 50,000 parcels per hour will be installed.

One of the largest and most efficient parcel centers in Europe is being built in Ludwigsfelde; it will be similar to DHL's existing centers in Obertshausen and Bochum. This will significantly strengthen the two existing locations for the Berlin area in Rüdersdorf and Börnicke. By way of comparison, they can process no more than 32,000 shipments per hour.

"The parcel market in the Berlin/Brandenburg metro region is growing continuously and so are the demands and requirements of our customers. Our investments in a new, efficient parcel center in Ludwigsfelde are a clear commitment to the region and its people. We will be offering around 600 well-paying union jobs. These will be secure jobs with professional prospects. We want to be our customers' first choice for logistics provider by offering reliable, high quality. In the future, our business customers will also benefit from the proximity to the parcel center: we will be able to pick up their shipments even later in the day and have them delivered anywhere in Germany on the following day," said Steffen Hemme, head of the Parcel Berlin branch.

"With the completion of the shell for the third mega-parcel center in Germany, Deutsche Post DHL Group has now reached an important milestone. On the part of the city of Ludwigsfelde, I would like to express my gratitude for the smooth implementation to date. At the same time, I am pleased that today DHL has been given the go-ahead for the technical expansion of the new parcel center which will meet Industry 4.0 standards. Implementing industrial value creation processes for the automated sorting of up to 50,000 parcels per hour forms the heart of this investment, which is important for our region. At the same time, it is a clear signal of DHL's confidence in the growth of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region," said Andreas Igel, Mayor of Ludwigsfelde.

DHL acquired the 165,000 m² (41 acre) site at the Eichspitze Industry 4.0 Park in Ludwigsfelde at the end of 2017. The parcel center building alone will be the size of five soccer fields, with around 37,000 m² (398,000 sq. ft.). In order to operate the building as energy-efficiently as possible, the use of a heat-driven combined heat and power plant is planned. The lighting will be provided by energy-saving LED lamps. DHL is investing tens of millions in the construction of the parcel center.

DHL continues to focus on further expanding the package infrastructure in order to be able to continue processing the constantly increasing parcel volumes reliably, quickly, and with great flexibility for both shippers and customers. Today, more than one million shipments can be processed each hour in DHL's 36 existing parcel centers. The new location in Ludwigsfelde will expand the existing nationwide parcel network from 2022 and further increase its performance.
