Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH has commissioned Zechbau GmbH from Bremen as the general contractor for the construction of the new Terminal T2 at BER Airport. The contract, which was advertised in an EU-wide operation, includes the services for the building construction and the technical equipment of the building.

The building permit for Terminal T2 issued by the building authority of the Dahme-Spreewald district has been available since July. In addition, the necessary construction site preparations were completed on schedule, so that the preparatory construction measures can already be started in the coming days. In 2020, Terminal T2 should be completed.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We have learnt from the experiences and difficulties with the extremely complex T1 passenger terminal. The T2 terminal building is visually appealing, but has a highly functional design. The assignment of the construction contract to a general contractor is part of this pragmatic approach. With Zechbau GmbH, we have a general contractor, who has successfully completed numerous construction projects, including at Hanover Airport.”

Terminal T2 is erected directly in front of the North Pier and has a total area of approx. 23,000 square meters, with a surface area of 240 x 40 metres and a height of approx. 15 meters. It has an annual capacity of six million passengers, and increases the capacity of BER to 28 million passengers in the first expansion stage. Together with Schönefeld Airport, which will be in operation until the end of 2025 (later becoming BER Terminal T5), the airport will be able to deal with around 40 million passengers per year from 2020.

Terminal T2 also serves as a processor and provides all functions from check-in, baggage check-in and retrieval, to security checks, service facilities, retail and catering. The aircraft is boarded from the North Pier, to which Terminal T2 is connected via two bridges. The new terminal offers optimal conditions for flying more passengers to and from Berlin, especially for low-cost airlines.
