„Berlin-Schöneweide is ... the location of many start-ups and globally active companies for which the proximity to universities, skilled workers and a high degree of international networking are essential.“

Sven Schmohl, Deputy Head of Economic Development Treptow-Köpenick

What advantages does the Airport Region offer for your location?

The business and science location Berlin Schöneweide is located in the middle of the innovation corridor Berlin-Lausitz, halfway between Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and the city center.

As the cradle of AEG and with a unique industrial history in the heart of the Airport Region, Schöneweide is the third largest future location in Berlin after Adlershof and the Urban Tech Republic TXL.

Many innovative companies at the interface of technology, science, research and design and many high-performance and globally successful start-ups appreciate the direct proximity to the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) and the creative climate and impressive industrial architecture on the Spree river, just as much as the good transport links and proximity to the airport, as well as the high recreational value of the nearby Volkspark Wuhlheide.

What would you like to see in the development of the region?

Berlin Schöneweide, together with the many settlements and innovation centers IPW, TGS and Adlershof, is a location for many start-ups and globally active companies for which proximity to universities, specialists and a high degree of international networking are essential.

Following the competencies and research areas of the HTW Berlin located here, Berlin Schöneweide will not only be the future location for new production technologies (digitization, industry 4.0), renewable energies and sustainability, but also a reference location for Smart City initiatives, urban production and creative industries characterized by craftsmanship (e.g. fashion and industrial design).

My wish is that the urgently needed infrastructure be adapted to the needs of the company, broadband and 5G connections are urgently needed for a future location.

But for Schöneweide, the Airport Region is an important location factor that could gain in international importance, especially by means of more direct flight connections. This could make the location even more attractive for our many global start-ups and company settlements.

Has the perception of your location changed? If so, to what extent?

With the opening of BER, the axis between the city center and the airport has become more prominent in the minds of the population and many companies, making the district of Treptow-Köpenick, the business location and also the future location Schöneweide more visible. Thanks to increasing networking in the Airport Region, I firmly believe that the location will continue to expand its image as an innovative breeding ground for successful start-ups and established companies.

We would like to thank Sven Schmohl for the interview!
