Dear readers, February is Rare Disease Month. During this time, awareness is raised worldwide for those affected by rare diseases. These may seem rare individually, but they affect a significant number of people worldwide. On Rare Disease Day, 29 February, many patient organisations, research institutions and celebrities raise awareness. Research plays a crucial role in helping those affected. The Airport Region Berlin Brandenburg is a leading location for the healthcare industry and life sciences. Renowned institutions such as the Berlin Centre for Rare Diseases at the Charité Berlin, the Max Delbrück Centre and the Berlin Institute of Health are involved in this research. New diagnostic methods enable early detection and better treatment, regenerative medicine treats the causes, and technical support systems improve the quality of care. Nearly 700 biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies benefit from the excellent scientific environment. Global companies such as Bayer, B. Braun, Berlin-Chemie, Pfizer, Sanofi, Takeda and numerous medium-sized companies characterise the healthcare industry.
