Edition 08/2025 | Summer in the Airport Region BB – New Impulses for Medicine, Mobility, and Startups

August 1, 2025

Dear Readers,

Summer is here – and with it, busy terminals at BER Airport: By early September, the airport expects around 3.7 million passengers, a clear sign of the vibrant tourism and travel activity in our region. This is around 100,000 more passengers than in 2024.

In this issue, you will read about the following, among other things:

  • 🚀 €30.8 million boost for biomedical innovation: The new Center for AI–Accelerated Molecular Innovations in Medicine (AI2M) at the Max Delbrück Center will use cutting-edge AI technologies to detect diseases before symptoms appear and develop more precise therapies. Interdisciplinary teams from research, clinics, and industry are joining forces to advance personalized medicine.
  • 🚘 Health meets mobility: Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and BMW Group are testing a vehicle that can monitor vital signs such as heart rate and respiration during driving – without physical contact. The goal is to turn cars into intelligent health companions that can provide early warnings for risks like strokes or heart attacks.
  • 🚀 Strong momentum for deep-tech startups:UNITE – the Startup Factory Berlin-Brandenburg is receiving multi-million-euro funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and is now recognized as one of Germany’s top ten flagship projects for science-based startups. The initiative aims to accelerate knowledge transfer and foster spin-offs in AI, health, and green technologies.

Further news from the growth industries of the Airport Region and updates on real estate developments can be found as usual on our website.

We wish you a relaxing summer – enjoy the warm weather, and cultural diversity on your travels!

With sunny regards,
Your team of Airport Region Berlin Brandenburg
