Starting signal for the development of the site at the former Berlin-Schoenefeld airport: Three renowned and internationally active architecture and planning offices will be involved in the subsequent use of the northern airport site between the former Terminal 5 of BER and the S-Bahn station in Schönefeld. An innovative and sustainable district is being created on the land owned by the airport company.
The airport company was able to win over COBE Berlin, FABRICations Amsterdam and MLA+ Rotterdam – Berlin to take part in this design competition. To kick things off, a colloquium took place on 2 August, 2023 with a site visit with the participating architects and urban planners as well as with representatives of the municipality of Schönefeld and BER Airport.
The three participating offices will develop creative, sustainable and marketable concepts for the future use of the area, which is currently largely underused. Both the local conditions and existing plans in the area must be taken into account. The main terminal of the former Berlin-Schoenefeld Airport and the current Terminal 5 of BER will be included explicitly in the work.
The results of the design competition will be presented in December 2023 and should form a basis for the further urban development of the district.
In addition to the terminal and airport buildings, the approximately 37-hectare site of the former Schoenefeld Airport includes a multi-storey car park, existing commercial buildings, car parks, and open and green spaces. Due to its proximity to the train station, the A113 motorway, the 96a trunk road and its location directly at BER Airport with the government terminal, it offers excellent transport connections and is considered attractive real estate.
“The development of a modern and sustainable district in the northern part of the airport zone is the start of a comprehensive transformation of the site by the airport company. We want to rethink the environment of BER and make it future-proof through unconventional, economically sensible and sustainable development. In the immediate vicinity of the airport, a modern and lively city district will be created in the coming years, which will decisively change and shape the current location.”
