Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is the heart of the Airport Region Berlin Brandenburg and its gateway to the world. Many companies consider the direct connections between economic markets and growth industries as significant success factors and location assets. With flights to over 150 destinations the international BER airport connects the capital region with cities in Europe, Asia, and North America. Not least it offers shorter flight times to Asian destinations compared to e.g. Paris and London.

Design competition for Quartier SXF 2.0 started at BER

Starting signal for the development of the site at the former Berlin-Schoenefeld airport: Three renowned and internationally active architecture and planning offices will be involved in the subsequent use of the northern airport site between the former Terminal 5 of BER and the S-Bahn station in Schönefeld. An innovative and sustainable district is being created on the land owned by the airport company.

The airport company was able to win over COBE Berlin, FABRICations Amsterdam and MLA+ Rotterdam – Berlin to take part in this design competition. To kick things off, a colloquium took place on 2 August, 2023 with a site visit with the participating architects and urban planners as well as with representatives of the municipality of Schönefeld and BER Airport.

The three participating offices will develop creative, sustainable and marketable concepts for the future use of the area, which is currently largely underused. Both the local conditions and existing plans in the area must be taken into account. The main terminal of the former Berlin-Schoenefeld Airport and the current Terminal 5 of BER will be included explicitly in the work.

The results of the design competition will be presented in December 2023 and should form a basis for the further urban development of the district.

In addition to the terminal and airport buildings, the approximately 37-hectare site of the former Schoenefeld Airport includes a multi-storey car park, existing commercial buildings, car parks, and open and green spaces. Due to its proximity to the train station, the A113 motorway, the 96a trunk road and its location directly at BER Airport with the government terminal, it offers excellent transport connections and is considered attractive real estate.

Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH:

“The development of a modern and sustainable district in the northern part of the airport zone is the start of a comprehensive transformation of the site by the airport company. We want to rethink the environment of BER and make it future-proof through unconventional, economically sensible and sustainable development. In the immediate vicinity of the airport, a modern and lively city district will be created in the coming years, which will decisively change and shape the current location.”

The offices:

COBE is an international architecture and urban planning office. It was founded in 2005 by Vanessa Miriam Carlow and Dan Stubbergaard in Copenhagen, the name is an acronym for the hometowns of the two founders, COpenhagen and BErlin. COBE Berlin has been in existence since October 2012. The office has already won numerous internationally high-profile projects, competitions and prizes. In Berlin, COBE is involved in the redesign of the new RAW site in Friedrichshain.

Founded in 2007 by Eric Frijters and Olv Klijn, FABRICations Amsterdam is active worldwide in the fields of architectural design, urban planning and regional strategies and focuses on sustainability solutions. In Berlin, FABRICations is mainly active in residential construction. The office is currently involved in the major project “Fennpfuhler Tor” on Storkower Strasse in Lichtenberg, where a new urban district is being built with living space for 1,500 people.

MLA+ was founded in Rotterdam in 1992 by Gerard Maccreanor and Richard Lavington. The office has been operating as an international network under the name MLA+ since 2012. The Berlin office has existed since 2017. MLA+ focuses on urban housing projects and planning urban districts. In Berlin, MLA+ is involved in the development of the new Gehrenseehöfe urban district in Alt-Hohenschönhausen and in the expansion of the Weißensee campus, a scientific and creative location, in Pankow.
