DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) celebrates the symbolic groundbreaking and project launch at Behrens-Ufer, Ostendstraße 1, 12459 Berlin-Oberschöneweide in the presence of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Mr. Kai Wegner, and 300 invited guests. As a sign of the developer's special attachment to the site as well as the intended sustainability of the now upcoming transformation of the neighborhood, a young rowan tree, donated by the civic foundation Treptow-Köpenick, was planted in the ground of the former industrial site as the first new element of the future green outdoor facilities. The celebrations immediately follow the completion of the first preparatory construction measures in the listed building (Peter Behrens Building with Hall 5 and House F) and the clearing of the construction site in the approximately two-hectare south-west square of the site.
DIEAG CEO Robert Sprajcar said at the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony: "We are very pleased that after several years of planning, the construction of the BE-U will soon take place here. I would like to thank all those involved in the project who are working with us to realize one of the world's most modern and sustainable urban districts. The planting of the tree serves as a symbolic sign. It will change its location during the construction phase until it reaches full maturity at its final destination. We would like to thank Bürgerstiftung Treptow-Köpenick for donating the tree." Sprajcar adds, "Prospering companies in technology and research-oriented industries will find space available as tenants that allows for flexible usage options. In addition, they, their employees and guests at BE-U will participate in an environment of higher education, art and cultural venues, as well as in a gastronomic culture that combines enjoyment and nutritional awareness."
Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin, says: "Behrens-Ufer is one of the lighthouse projects of Berlin's urban development - and is rightly mentioned in the same breath as the Urban Tech Republic, Siemensstadt Square and Molkenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte. And Behrens-Ufer is also a good example of trusting cooperation between the public sector and private investors. The unique geothermal project stands for sustainability, as does the involvement of local residents and the companies that will operate on Behrens-Ufer. Today's groundbreaking ceremony is an important milestone for the entire Oberschöneweide site of the future and in the creation of up to 12,000 jobs."
Klemens Haselsteiner, CEO of STRABAG SE, emphasized, "I, too, would like to thank you for inviting us to this extraordinary ceremony. It makes us proud to be involved in the revitalization of this quarter with our subsidiary ZÜBLIN. We are rethinking construction: at Behrensufer, we are showing how it is possible to prevent land sealing and counteract the waste of resources by building in existing structures. The project is an excellent example of how an old industrial site can be transformed into a lively and versatile place for the future, and how modernization, climate protection and historic preservation can be brought together. For us, Behrensufer is a unique opportunity to use our construction and planning expertise to create a livable space for all user:s."
Ingard Krause, chairwoman of Bürgerstiftung Treptow-Köpenick, says: "Bürgerstiftung congratulates warmly on the groundbreaking ceremony for this exciting project. The structural development at this historic site will be just as special as the creation of thousands of new jobs for many different companies. This is a special development for our district of Treptow-Köpenick and also for local civic engagement. We are very pleased to be able to be part of this from the beginning and to set a sign with the tree that connects us sustainably."
With BE-U | Behrens-Ufer, a total of 235,000 m² of rental space is being created in historic and new buildings for businesses primarily from the life science, laboratory and light industrial sectors. In addition, the Innovation LABs for new energy, food, arts & culture and urban development will provide a development platform for the exchange of knowledge and the further development of the location. The results of their work will be directly incorporated into the development of the neighborhood.
Completion is planned for 2028. The first leases have been signed for existing and new buildings.
