Bauwens celebrates the topping-out ceremony for the pioneering AERA office building in Berlin

The shell of the building on the Spree on Berlin’s Mierendorff Island, which has now been completed, suggests that this is no ordinary office building. The area of the spectacular roof park meanders in terraces past the openings in the concrete structure, which will soon be closed with 5.40 meter sized panoramic glazing. It is already clear: AERA is a piece of the future and part of a vision of the city of tomorrow, for which the topping-out ceremony has now been celebrated.

The building, designed by Grüntuch Ernst Architekten, merges the boundaries between city and nature and indoor and outdoor spaces. The office space offers a seamless transition to the roof park, elaborately designed by cappattistaubach, with a total area of 2,200 square meters, trees up to twelve meters high, 25 different types of plants and almost half a kilometer of paths.

Start of letting for 12,000 square meters of office space

“We designed AERA for companies that want to offer their employees the best possible office,” says Clemens Stahr, head of the Berlin office of Bauwens, explaining the basic idea behind the project. AERA enables a completely new working atmosphere by linking modern office space with direct access to green areas. “We are creating areas here that are unique in this way. Anyone who moves in here definitely has a great asset on their side in the competition for the best skilled workers and specialists,” says Stahr. State-of-the-art equipment enables the reliable use of mobile work equipment throughout the building – including in the outdoor areas. The total area of 12,000 square meters can be flexibly divided into areas from 400 square meters upwards. In total, AERA offers space for up to 1,000 work places.

Work on the spectacular property is progressing rapidly: Excavation for the building began in April 2021. In November of the same year, the construction company MBN started the shell construction, which has now been completed. Now comes the interior finishing.
