The Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam becomes part of the European AI Network ELLIS.

The European Learning and Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ELLIS) has announced the inclusion of Potsdam as a new region in the prestigious Artificial Intelligence (AI) Network of Excellence.

The new ELLIS unit Potsdam (ELLIS Sustainable Life Potsdam) comprises the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPl), the University of Potsdam (UP) and the Center for AI in Health Research (ZKl-PH) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). Their goal is to advance the development and application of AI in the areas of sustainability and health, and to further strengthen Potsdam as a location for cutting-edge AI research.

Moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, storing energy and minimizing energy consumption, personalized medicine, and algorithm-driven analysis of viruses to prevent and contain endemics and pandemics are some of the most important challenges of our time. The new unit's research agenda therefore includes activities in AI and energy, AI for medicine, genomics and infectious diseases, and efficient and scalable methods for AI algorithms.

"The ELLIS Potsdam unit offers unique opportunities for AI research in the region. It will help develop scalable, causal and explainable AI methods that bridge the scientific fields of medicine, chemistry, physics and computer science and address new challenges in healthcare and energy management," says Professor Ralf Herbrich, co-director of the ELLIS Potsdam unit as well as head of the Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability Department and managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute.

Short profile Hasso Plattner Institute

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam is Germany's university center of excellence for digital engineering (https://hpi.de). With its bachelor's degree program in "IT Systems Engineering," the joint digital engineering faculty of HPI and the University of Potsdam offers an engineering computer science program that is unique in Germany and particularly practice-oriented, and is currently used by around 800 students. It conducts excellent university research - in its IT departments, but also in the HPI Research School for doctoral students with its research outposts in Cape Town, Irvine, Haifa and Nanjing.
