30 Years of Adlershof

This year, the Adlershof Technology Park celebrates its 30th anniversary. The 5G campus network will launch in the second half of 2021.

In 1991, a group of Berlin politicians decided that an “integrated landscape of business and science” should be created in Adlershof. The development of the Technology Park was originally planned to take three years; meanwhile, 30 years have passed and the development is impressive: Although in the early 1990s Rudower Chaussee was still dominated by the nearby section of the Berlin Wall and no man’s land, today Adlershof is spoken about as one of the most successful science and technology parks in all of Europe with 1,200 resident institutions and companies.

Important components for the success were the transfer of institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR, which were already located in Adlershof, into today’s well-known large-scale research institutions, such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR), over the course of German reunification as well as the successive relocation of the natural science faculties of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin between 1998 and 2008.

Over the past 30 years, the infrastructure at the location has been consistently geared to meet the needs of research and technology development. Current examples of this include the supply of technology-oriented commercial space, some with high-quality equipment standards and very favorable rents compared with city center locations, and the new 5G campus network, which will be launched in the second half of 2021.
