At EXPO REAL in Munich, the EDGE Suedkreuz Berlin office development, whose main tenant is energy company Vattenfall, received the first WELL Core Platinum certification in Germany. This is the highest certificate awarded by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). The award confirms Edge's corporate goal of using its buildings to have a positive impact on people's health and well-being. IWBI's certification acknowledged that EDGE Suedkreuz has a special focus on human health and well-being and confirmed Edge's commitment to building better buildings for people and the environment worldwide. Building performance criteria assessed by IWBI include: air, water, food, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, materials, spirit and community.
Together with Vattenfall we achieved this certification in a cooperative process by creating spaces that improve health and well-being of 1600 employees at Vattenfall’s German Headquarters.
"With EDGE Suedkreuz, we are once again demonstrating that it is possible to integrate a user-centered view in parallel on a holistic and an individual level. In this way, we optimize the health and well-being of the buildings’ users and create the conditions through which they can develop their potential in the best possible way. We are very proud to see our efforts being recognized with the highest certification according to WELL v2 standard," says Edge’s Founder and CEO, Coen van Oostrom.
EDGE Suedkreuz exemplifies Edge's pioneering role in real estate development. The ensemble comprises two buildings: "Carré," the larger of the two, which is entirely occupied by Vattenfall a European energy company, and a smaller building called "Solitär." These buildings were built according to the designs of Tchoban Voss Architekten using the CREE wood hybrid system. Approximately 3,500 m3 of certified wood was used in the construction of EDGE Suedkreuz, reducing CO2 emissions from the components manufactured with it by up to approximately 80% compared to conventional components made of (steel) concrete. To ensure sustainable long-term operation, EDGE Suedkreuz is equipped with plug-and-play multi-sensors and connected to the EDGE Next technology platform. In the cloud, almost all data on light, air quality, and temperature are granularly monitored and adjusted fully automatically for maximum energy and health efficiency. EDGE Suedkreuz was also the first building in Germany to be added to the MADASTER materials database with a 100% match. The office complex was handed over to COLCAP in 2022 and received DGNB Platinum certification in the same year with the highest overall compliance level ever achieved (95.4%).
The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) is taking a leadership role in the global movement to transform our buildings for health. It’s WELL Building Standard is based on taking a holistic view of health and well-being and is currently used in 55 countries worldwide. Based on the knowledge that people spend an average of 90 percent of their lives in buildings, a series of evidence-based studies analyse the concrete impact these buildings have on health and well-being.
