The interior fit-out of the Gasometer was the final construction project on the EUREF-Campus Berlin. The 28,000 square metres of office space were handed over to Deutsche Bahn on time at the end of January. In the coming weeks, Deutsche Bahn will move into the building with up to 2,000 employees and drive forward the digitalisation of the railways from here.
The redesign of the gasometer was based on the historical image of the telescopic container of the low-pressure gas tank moving up and down inside the scaffolding. The grey, historic steel scaffolding now acts as a frame for the new round building, with a respectful distance of one metre. It has thus been preserved in all its splendour and remains visible, and was restored in line with its listed status at the same time as the construction.
The green steel shell, i.e. the lower part of the gasometer, will once again become the conference area, i.e. the forum of the EUREF-Campus. This will be opened on 24 and 25 June 2024 with the Day of Industry, the BDI's future conference. On the upper floor, behind the steel and glass façade, there will be space for presentations and events as well as a roof terrace - including a view over Berlin from a height of around 66 metres. The project, which was handed over on time, cost more than 200 million euros.
The EUREF-Campus Berlin is the leading location for the energy transition in Germany. More than 150 companies, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises from business, science and research are based on the 5.5-hectare site and work with around 5,000 employees on topics of the future such as energy management, mobility and climate protection. The latest technologies are developed here and their use researched. As an international showcase for the energy and mobility transition, the EUREF-Campus has been meeting the German government's CO2 climate targets for 2045 since 2014 and is also a reference site for the state of Berlin's Smart City strategy.
EUREF AG will open a second EUREF-Campus at the Düsseldorf/Flughafen ICE railway station in 2024. Further locations in other cities are being planned, for example in Zurich and Hamburg.
