easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, now makes it possible for easyJet customers to combine flight and rail tickets easily and conveniently in one booking process. This is done by means of the new cooperation with Deutsche Bahn (DB) as part of the “Worldwide by easyJet” program. The intermodal linking of air and rail travel is initially possible via Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). With the DB cooperation, easyJet is underlining its position as the home airline for Berlin-Brandenburg, as it expands the catchment area of BER to the surrounding Federal States with the intermodal travel connection and connects it seamlessly with travel destinations across Europe. The first-time connection with the train makes it possible to make the journeys of our customers even more sustainable.
With the Deutsche Bahn-Partnership, for the first time a railway company has become a partner of the intermodal mobility platform “Worldwide by easyJet”. The new offer from easyJet and Deutsche Bahn offers customers a more seamless travel experience and a “one-stop shop” for booking their combined travel. All rail tickets, both flex and economy tickets, automatically include the DB “City-Ticket”, where available, for a convenient connection from your own front door right to the door of the aircraft. Booking via the platform gives passengers additional security as it offers comprehensive protection in the event of possibly missed connections. The travel plan, including all transfer times, is also clearly summarized for customers in a document so that they always have an overview of the entire journey.
Stephan Erler, Country Manager Germany at easyJet, comments: “After more than 17 years of continuous commitment in the capital region, easyJet is taking the next step and is expanding the connectivity of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport to the surrounding Federal States. The new cooperation with Deutsche Bahn offers travelers via BER a seamless and reliable connection to around 70 direct destinations across Europe. This future-oriented product simply links flight and train and enables a further step towards even more sustainable travel by means of additional intermodal transfer options.”
With the new DB cooperation, easyJet is initially offering its customers seamless connections with a large selection of cities such as Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt, Jena, Halle, Magdeburg, Rostock or Frankfurt (Oder), as well as Hanover and Wolfsburg. With the combination of train and plane tickets, the airline enables another 5 million people to travel conveniently without a car in the BER catchment area. The arriving European travelers benefit from the easy accessibility of popular travel regions outside the capital region. The integration of rail connections to other cities is to be continuously expanded. EasyJet customers have long-distance DB connections as well as regional trains at their disposal, with the best train-flight connections already preselected. With the train ticket offer, travelers can choose between saver and flex prices and a reserved seat is included. For easyJet flights, the usual options for seating and baggage apply.
In addition to the improved travel service, the new product is also characterized by its sustainability, because both corporate partners committed themselves to the goal of climate neutrality years ago. easyJet has a long tradition of efficient flying: The modern fleet and flight operations are geared towards CO2 efficiency, meaning that the company is already significantly more efficient than many other airlines. In addition to continuously reducing its CO2 footprint, easyJet is working with its partners Airbus and Wright Electric to advance the development of emission-free technologies such as hydrogen and electric drives and ultimately to decarbonize aviation. As a transitional measure until new technologies are available, easyJet has been the first major airline since 2019 to offset the CO2 emissions from the fuel consumption of all flights by investing in certified climate protection projects. As one of the largest users of green electricity, Deutsche Bahn has been operating all electrically powered ICE and IC/EC trains with 100 percent green electricity since 2018. Together, the two companies are offering as environmentally friendly a travel chain as is currently possible.
As the leading airline partner at BER Airport, easyJet makes an important contribution to the connectivity of the capital’s airport and connects millions of people with the most popular cities and travel destinations across Europe and beyond. In addition to the new linking of air and rail transport, customers can also use the “Worldwide by easyJet” program to combine easyJet flights with connecting flights from the airline’s entire network as well as flights operated by airline partners to other destinations around the world. The easyJet network with more than 5,000 departure and arrival locations that can be booked in combination with partner airlines is continuously being expanded. The collaboration between Worldwide by easyJet & DB, operated by Dohop, marks the beginning of the technology provider’s intermodal offering as part of its already established virtual interline ecosystem.
Antonio Pascale, Distribution and Alliances Manager at easyJet, comments: “With ‘Worldwide by easyJet’, four years ago we presented the world’s first intermodal mobility platform from a large, independent low-cost carrier. Since then, this extraordinary journey has made us a leading player in the digital interlining ecosystem. The expansion of the offer to include train travel underlines our commitment to innovation and the great potential of our mobility platform. With this, we are taking a further step to consolidate our position as number 1 or number 2 at the leading European airports by offering our passengers additional mobility options.”
