The Dahme river almost on the doorstep, a green environment and the old town of Köpenick within easy reach: Berliners will be able to find a new home with a high feel-good factor on Wendenschloßstraße from 2026. This will be made possible by Gewobag, which celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its new construction project in the Treptow-Köpenick district here in May 2024.
Malte Bädelt and Markus Terboven, members of the Management Board of the state-owned housing construction company, invited Urban Development Senator Christian Gaebler and District Councillor Dr. Claudia Leistner to a special symbolic act: With good wishes, they completed the lushly planted topping-out wreath with small house models symbolizing the new Gewobag quarter. The wreath then rose into the sky with fluttering blue ribbons representing the waterfront location of the new quarter.
The construction of Gewobag's seven buildings since summer 2023 has gone as smoothly as this ceremony. Up to seven storeys high, they will overlook the former Köpenick industrial area between Wendenschloßstraße and Dahme.
Markus Terboven, member of the Gewobag Management Board: “Thanks to sustainable neighborhood development, our future tenants will not only have direct access to a public park with playgrounds. The Dahme with its inviting river promenade is also within walking distance. Natural and urban elements are combined here. And all this in 255 modern, almost entirely barrier-free 1- to 5-room apartments for different stages of life at affordable rents. We let a total of 219 apartments at subsidized rents from €7.00/sqm. With this neighborhood, Gewobag is also making an important contribution to ensuring that Berlin remains liveable and affordable.”
Malte Bädelt, member of the Gewobag Management Board: “Berlin continues to grow and Gewobag is growing with it. Together with our strong project partner, we are building more apartments for broad sections of the population at different stages of life in an environment worth living in. The mix of apartments and the outdoor facilities in the new quarter promote community and encounters between our tenants - an important basis for good neighborliness. I am very pleased that we are also fulfilling our social responsibility with the daycare center and senior care home in Wendenschloßstrasse and creating a total of 150 places for children and 200 care places.”
Christian Gaebler, Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing: “With this project, Gewobag is once again demonstrating that modern living in green surroundings and affordable rents are not mutually exclusive - and that in an increasingly popular residential area of our city. In Wendenschloßstrasse, quality of life and the meeting of generations, embedded in a natural environment, play a central role. At the same time, ecology and sustainability have been taken into account in many details. The result is a new home worth living in for many people.”
Dr. Claudia Leistner, District Councillor for Roads, Green Spaces, Environment and Nature Conservation:
“Gewobag is creating a versatile new neighborhood in Wendenschloßstraße that will give hundreds of people a new home. Affordable living space will be created, which we urgently need. I am particularly pleased that nature, which gives our district its unmistakable character, has been taken into account and complemented by a newly created park.”
