Gewobag award ceremony: Laudator Felix Gruber (DBU) presents the award to Karsten Mitzinger, Managing Director of Gewobag ED

Gewobag receives RealGreen Award

The German Business Initiative for Energy Efficiency (DENEFF e.V.) presented the RealGreen Award 2024 in Berlin to Germany's most sustainable real estate projects: innovative companies and projects that play a pioneering role in the climate-neutral transformation of existing buildings.

The "Special Award for Special Efforts" went to Gewobag for its planned sustainable supply of the Pallasseum with building energy law-compliant heat from a neighboring data center.

The jury acknowledged the exemplary and lighthouse character of the project through the pioneering use of waste heat from a data center, the energy supply of the Pallasseum despite challenging basic requirements due to the listed building status and the price stability for tenants.

The Pallasseum, a Gewobag residential complex with over 500 apartments in Berlin-Schöneberg, will be supplied with waste heat from a neighboring ITC network node of PASM Power and Air Condition Solution Management GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, by Gasag Solution Plus from October 2025.

Karsten Mitzinger, Managing Director of Gewobag Energie- und Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH:

"I am very proud that our visionary pilot project convinced the jury of the RealGreen Award. In future, 65 percent of the heat required for the listed Pallasseum building from the 1970s will come from previously unused waste heat. By using green electricity to operate the heat pumps, we will save more than 800 tons of CO2 per year. Awards like this are an additional incentive for us to continue on this path."

Markus Terboven, member of the Gewobag Management Board:

"The Pallasseum is the first heating project in Berlin to use waste heat from an ITC network node. I am delighted that our efforts to produce climate-friendly heat for more than 500 apartments have been recognized with such a prestigious award. Our new energy concept enables a sustainable and cost-neutral conversion of the supply in existing properties. And best of all, our tenants will not only benefit from price-stable, green energy in future. We are also taking Berlin a step closer to climate neutrality."

The project is a collaboration between GASAG AG, PASM Power and Air Condition Solution Management GmbH and Gewobag.
