The Berlin-Brandenburg Optics and Photonics Cluster is a reliable source of data on the economic development of companies in this sector, and the latest edition is no exception. For the first time, the Cluster has expanded to include companies from the microelectronics and microsystems technology sectors, providing a comprehensive view of the region's high-tech industries.
The cluster, comprising 386 companies and over 20,000 employees, contributes significantly to the region's economic development, with total revenue of €6.3 billion. Notably, 16% of revenue is allocated to research and development, emphasising the region's technological expertise. Additionally, the industry has an export share that exceeds the average, at 64%.
Despite positive developments, companies are facing several challenges, including a shortage of skilled professionals. By 2025, around 3,000 positions will need to be filled, particularly in engineering, IT, and technical fields. Furthermore, the global competitive landscape requires continuous investment in research, development, and workforce training.
