Ludwigsfelde: Deutsche Post DHL Group opens its first mega parcel center in eastern Germany

On June 1, Deutsche Post DHL officially commissioned the new mega parcel center in Ludwigsfelde, further expanding the performance of DHL Parcel's Germany-wide network. Together with the Minister President of the State of Brandenburg, Dietmar Woidke, and the Mayor of Ludwigsfelde, Andreas Igel, Tobias Meyer, Member of the Board of Management for Post and Parcel Germany at Deutsche Post DHL Group, opened the new site just outside Berlin. The company has invested a low three-digit million euro sum in the modern Ludwigsfelde site in order to be able to cope even better and faster with the high parcel volumes still expected as a result of growing e-commerce. With a sorting capacity of 50,000 shipments per hour, the Ludwigsfelde parcel center - along with the two locations in Obertshausen and Bochum - is one of the largest of the total of 37 DHL parcel centers throughout Germany and one of the most efficient in Europe. It is the first mega parcel center of this type in eastern Germany.

The Ludwigsfelde site currently employs approximately 550 people. By the time full capacity is reached, most likely by the end of 2024, the new location will have created around 600 jobs that are subject to social security contributions and are bound by collective bargaining agreements. New employees are paid in accordance with the current Deutsche Post AG collective agreement. This also applies to temporary workers.

“With the construction of the parcel center in Ludwigsfelde, we are investing further in the capacity and quality of our service in Germany and are preparing for further growth. With a high sorting capacity and the use of innovative technology, the new parcel center in Ludwigsfelde is making an important contribution to our German parcel network,” says Tobias Meyer.

With Ludwigsfelde, the two existing parcel centers for the Berlin area in Rüdersdorf and Börnicke will be relieved and customers in Berlin and Brandenburg can be supplied with parcels even more reliably and quickly.

"We are delighted to be able to create jobs subject to social security contributions and bound by collective bargaining agreements in a logistically advantageous location in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. This investment demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the Berlin-Brandenburg region and its people," Meyer added.

Dietmar Woidke, Minister President of the State of Brandenburg: "Today we are experiencing a new era of parcel delivery and are standing in one of the most modern machine rooms of the parcel age: The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2019. Three years later, with an immense investment, a 37,000 square meter industrial building has been constructed. Up to 50,000 shipments per hour are sorted here and sent to the customers. In conjunction with the excellent connection to the Ludwigsfelde site, even faster, more reliable supply is now guaranteed. The number of jobs subject to collective agreements and subject to social security contributions is to increase from the current 550 to up to 600 once the facility has gone into operation. This fits in with our goal of 'good work'. This is the right way, because good working conditions and fair pay are fundamental to attracting and retaining much-needed specialists."

"The investment of the DHL Group in one of Europe's largest parcel centers with 600 jobs subject to collective bargaining agreements not only strengthens Ludwigsfelde as a business location, but also has an impact on the entire region," says Andreas Igel, Mayor of the City of Ludwigsfelde. I have found the collaboration between the city of Ludwigsfelde and Deutsche Post to be highly professional and trustworthy from the start, and I am proud that the most modern parcel center in eastern Germany is now known as Ludwigsfelde." Andreas Igel adds, "The parcel center's individually developed and innovative digital high-tech is true Industry 4.0. That was exactly the vision we pursued with Eichspitze at the beginning of development. I wish DHL and their employees at the new location the best of luck and look forward to working with them in the future."

At the end of 2017, DHL acquired the property in the Industrial park 4.0 Eichspitze Ludwigsfelde with an area of around 165,000 square meters and good connections to the road and rail network. The parcel center building is around 37,000 square meters. In order to operate it as energy-efficiently as possible, the parcel center is supplied with its own combined heat and power plant. To achieve this, the company buys biogas, which significantly reduces CO2 emissions at this location. Energy-saving LED lamps are used for the lighting, which are controlled by motion detectors. The location is one of the first where the internal yard traffic is carried out with electrically operated transfer vehicles. This makes an additional contribution to reducing noise and CO2 emissions.

Including the new location in Ludwigsfelde, Deutsche Post DHL now operates a network of 37 parcel centers in Germany.
