Revitalization of a Historic Berlin Office Building

On behalf of the Deutscher Beamtenwirtschaftsbund (BWB), the Berlin based architecture practice Bollinger + Fehlig Architekten has completed the comprehensive revitalization of the historic building at Leipziger Straße 26. The flexible floor plans, with a usable area of 2,907 square meters, were renovated with a long-term perspective in mind and in accordance with high office standards.

Designed around 1908 by architect Georg Rathenau, this office and commercial building is located in the heart of the capital, near the intersection of Friedrichstraße and Leipziger Straße. It is one of the oldest structures in the neighborhood and combines its historic character with a forward-looking redesign.

The historic complex consists of a prestigious front building along the street, a west-facing side wing with a first inner courtyard, and a back house that opens onto another courtyard area. The street facing facade is still characterized by distinctive Art Deco elements, which give the building a striking historical identity.

Modern Work Environments

The property consists of five above-ground floors and an attic. The building was divided into partial ownership units on a floor-by-floor basis. The result is flexible office space characterized by high quality finishes, including built-in cabinets with oak veneer, glass partition walls, and exclusively equipped kitchens.

In addition to modernizing the office spaces, the project focused in particular on enhancing the quality of the environment: The two inner courtyards were redesigned as green retreats. The overall objective was to preserve the building's historic character while providing contemporary, high-quality workplaces in the centre of Berlin.
