Revitalization of the historical Bärenquell area in Berlin's district of Treptow-Köpenick

The Bärenquell area, located directly on the Spree River in Niederschöneweide, will become an innovative address for creative industries, research and culture.

With the Airport Region Berlin Brandenburg continually growing, the public focus shifts to locations and monuments in the neighbouring district of Treptow-Köpenick which had been left to decay for too long. Exemplary for this development is the fourhectare Bärenquell area in Niederschöneweide, located directly on the Spree.

While the northern bank of the Spree along Wilhelminenhofstrasse has developed into a steadily growing creative, cultural and educational location in recent years, the development of the southern bank of the Spree seemed to have stagnated for a long time. These times are over. On the grounds of the historic Bärenquell brewery, the project developer Home Center Management (HCM) will create a diverse quarter with offices, scientific facilities, art, culture, handicrafts and restaurants.

Architect Sergei Tchoban developed the master plan for the area and provides for the formerly closed factory site with event rooms and leisure facilities to be developed as an open and lively urban location with day and night use. The banks of the Spree will be freely accessible here in the future.

In this holistic, integrated and sustainable development concept, around 70 percent of the old buildings are to be retained and supplemented with cutting-edge new buildings. The splendid buildings of the brick ensemble, erected in 1882 as the Borussia Meinert und Kampfhenkel brewery, are being extensively renovated in close cooperation with the State Monuments Office Berlin and the district monument protection authority. At the same time, the majority of the graffiti that can be seen on the site today is to be preserved in order to retain the raw, creative spirit, as investor Ofer Hava emphasizes: “The quarter should be organically connected to the creative uses of the factory buildings on the other bank of the Spree Both companies and start-ups as well as cultural projects provide a fitting ambiance.”

Approximately 12,800 square meters are already available in the ground floor zones for cultural and innovative uses and temporary uses. The legendary Techno Club Grießmühle has also found a new home here for its "Southeast region".
