Battery Industry in the Capital Region Networks

The new value chain of the battery industry in Brandenburg and Berlin is continuously evolving. From material refinement to cell manufacturing, testing, battery packs, and recycling, projects in the capital region now encompass the entire battery life cycle. Moreover, the emerging industry is networking—with the support of cluster managements in the economic development agencies of both states. The four cluster managements for transportation, mobility, and logistics; energy technology; plastics and chemistry; as well as metals and their partners, are already inviting participants for the third time to the "Battery Forum Berlin-Brandenburg.

Brandenburg's Minister Steinbach emphasizes the role of the battery industry for regional development

At the forum, Brandenburg's Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, and Energy, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Steinbach, discusses the importance of the battery industry for the transformation and economic development in the state of Brandenburg. The battery industry has rapidly become a focal point of the modern industry. Since Tesla's decision for Brandenburg in 2019, establishments across the entire battery technology value chain have come to the region. According to the study "Battery Competencies in and around Brandenburg," more than 30 companies in Brandenburg alone are involved in the battery value chain, providing around 10,000 jobs. In total, the study considered approximately 130 stakeholders from Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, North Thuringia, as well as the Polish voivodeships of Lower Silesia and Opole.

Dr. Carolin Kresse from the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) provides an up-to-date overview of the recently implemented Battery Regulation of the European Union. The opportunities and challenges arising from this are the focus of the subsequent discussion panel with Minister of Economic Affairs Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Steinbach, along with experts Dr. Carolin Kresse, Dr. Mischa Bechberger from VDI/VDE-IT, Prof. Dr. Jörg Acker from BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, and the Managing Director of BASF Battery Materials and Recycling Schwarzheide GmbH, Dr. Jan Rudloff.

Cooperation for the promotion of the battery industry in the capital region

The conference was organized by the cluster managements located within the economic development agencies WFBB (Economic Development Agency Brandenburg) and Berlin Partner, in cooperation with the Battery Network for the Regionalization of the Circular Economy for Lithium-Ion Battery Systems and Future Technologies (ReLioS), the transformation project Transformation Network for the Vehicle and Supply Industry in the Berlin-Brandenburg Region (ReTraNetz-BB), and the project "Competence Development for Battery Cell Manufacturing in the Capital Region" (KOMBiH), which focuses on the needs-based qualification of employees in battery companies. The KOMBiH project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics. Involved in this are the Institute for Vocational Education Research (IBBF), the Vocational Training Center (bfw) of the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB), the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), and the cluster managements for energy technology, as well as transportation, mobility, and logistics in the economic development agencies of both states.
