DIEAG launches closed architectural competition for striking high points on BE-U │ Behrens-Ufer

DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) is launching a single-phase, closed architectural competition in accordance with the guidelines for planning competitions for the three prominent high points of its BE-U | Behrens-Ufer district development. Until June 3, 2024, 15 architectural firms, spread across three properties, have been invited to take into account the ambitious targets for energy-efficient and sustainable construction in their designs and to integrate the existing urban development concept and its specifications accordingly. The architectural competition will be held simultaneously for all three high-rise buildings of the BE-U | Behrens-Ufer commercial district development in order to focus on the district concept of the area. Drees & Sommer SE was commissioned to plan and implement the competition.

Challenges and opportunities of the architectural competition

Robert Sprajcar, DIEAG board member and member of the jury, says: "Due to the complexity of the competition, the jury meeting has been split into two days and is scheduled for July 11 and 12. The jury's task is to identify the best possible compatibility of the overarching, city-wide specifications and recommendations of the high-rise model of the state of Berlin with the detailed concepts of the Treptow-Köpenick district and the vision of the overall quarter in the designs submitted."

Ulrike Zeidler, Head of Urban Development Treptow-Köpenick and member of the jury, emphasizes: "The area around the Peter-Behrens-Bau as a monument of modern Berlin industrial culture with its significant history as a commercial location creates a unique basis for an innovative and sustainable commercial district here in Treptow-Köpenick. I am delighted to be part of the jury and to make my contribution to this future location in Berlin."

Expert jury and architectural concepts for BE-U district development

The positions of the jury (jury) have been allocated as follows: The substantive jury is made up of: Robert Sprajcar (DIEAG), Prof. Stefanie Molthagen-Schnöring (HTW), Senate Building Director Prof. Petra Kahlfeldt (Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing), Ulrike Zeidler (Treptow-Köpenick District Office) and Till Ackers (Züblin). The expert jury consists of the following experts: Dieter Eckert (ENS Architekten BDA), Prof. Silvia Malcovati (FH Potsdam), Prof. Dogan G. Yurdakul (GfP - Gesellschaft für Planung), Reinhard Busch (Fugmann Janotta und Partner) and Prof. Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir (Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Architekten)

The concepts should exploit the potential of the location and enrich the architecture, whereby a heterogeneous urban concept is desired. The building in the immediate vicinity of the Spree with the working title A 1.3. comprises a gross floor area of around 15,000 square meters. The A 3.1. building, including the base, has a gross floor area of around 33,000 square meters and the third building at the eastern end of the site, numbered A 3.3., has a gross floor area of around 28,000 square meters.
