Growth Report for the Optics and Photonics Cluster 2021/2022 Berlin Brandenburg

Growth Report for the Optics and Photonics Cluster 2021/2022 Berlin Brandenburg

The growth report is an indicator-based analysis of the economic development of companies in the optics and photonics cluster in Berlin and Brandenburg 2021/2022. The report was published in December 2022.

The cluster management regularly surveys the economic development of around 360 companies in Berlin and Brandenburg. In addition to analyzing current data on sales, employment, research and development investments, and exports - especially in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic - the companies were surveyed regarding their technological focus, innovative trends, research activities, targeted markets, climate change-related challenges, and the effects of the shortage of skilled workers. In addition, there was a special focus on the need for support from regional networks for optical technologies and the economic development agencies of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg.

Possible applications in different areas

The cross-border cluster for optics and photonics was established in the context of the Berlin-Brandenburg Innovation Strategy (innoBB) with the aim of enabling companies and research institutions to access resources such as know-how or funding on a local and global level. The activities of the cluster management are co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development. The focus is on supporting innovation and collaboration between companies and research institutions to increase competitiveness for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

The fields of optical technologies and microsystems technology bundled in the optics and photonics cluster are among the most important key technologies of the 21st century and are among the five so-called "Key Enabling Technologies (KET)" at the European level.

The future is light

With its more than 200-year tradition in optical technologies and thanks to the broad range of expertise offered by its numerous companies and research institutions, the airport region of Berlin and Brandenburg region is one of the global leaders in the industry. Optics and microsystems technology in particular often act as connecting elements between different technologies and thus form the basis for innovative products and services in areas such as medicine or communications technology. To further promote these advances, six so-called fields of action have been defined: #Laser Technology, Light Technology, #Photonics for #Communication and #SensorTechnology, #OpticalAnalytics, #Biomedical Optics and #Ophthalmic Optics, and #Microsystems Technology.
