A new perspective for the Glaser Höfe

GSG Berlin has leased around 900 square metres of space at the Glaser-Höfe in Berlin-Kreuzberg to Montessori Stiftung Berlin. The foundation runs Montessori Oberstufe Berlin, which will move into the listed commercial complex at Blücherstraße 22 in August 2026.

Independent learning in new spaces

Montessori Oberstufe Berlin prepares students for the Abitur, the German higher education entrance qualification, and is unique in Berlin for its educational concept based on the principles of Maria Montessori. It combines self-directed learning, individual guidance and practical learning with a strong sense of school community. At the Glaser-Höfe, bright and open spaces will be created for teaching, project work and focused study.

“The new location at the Glaser-Höfe creates a prepared learning environment in the spirit of Maria Montessori’s understanding of education, where young people can learn independently and take responsibility,” says Bianka Matthai, Member of the Executive Board of Montessori Stiftung Berlin. “The Glaser-Höfe are also centrally located and easy to reach, providing excellent access for our students and for the other institutions of Montessori Stiftung Berlin.”

Historic location with a new use

The Glaser-Höfe are among GSG Berlin’s most historic locations. The five-storey Art Nouveau building was constructed in 1910 to plans by architect August Gietenbruch for the purchasing and sales cooperative of Germany’s independent master glaziers. Green mosaic panels, a richly decorated bay window and five rear courtyards faced in white brick define the listed ensemble. Today, the site comprises around 14,500 square metres of commercial space.

Commercial courtyard and place of education at the same time

“With Montessori Stiftung Berlin, one of our most historic Kreuzberg courtyards gains a new educational use,” says Sebastian Blecke, Chief Operating Officer of GSG Berlin. “This shows the scope our locations offer beyond traditional commercial uses. In inner-city locations in particular, Berlin needs additional space for education. It is essential that building and safety requirements are carefully assessed and implemented. The Glaser-Höfe offer very good conditions for this.”

With Montessori Oberstufe Berlin moving in, the existing mix of uses at the Glaser-Höfe gains an additional function within the neighbourhood. The site remains a commercial complex, while also becoming a place of education.
