In the presence of Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and Mayor of Berlin, and Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Treptow-Köpenick, DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) ceremoniously handed over the first completed premises of the emerging BE-U | Behrens-Ufer commercial district to ASML on 20 November 2024. One of the leading suppliers to the semiconductor industry is starting operations in its production and laboratory areas and offices with the handover of the 13,000 square metres of
rental space. The space comprises 5,500 square metres in the listed former assembly centre Hall 5 in the inner courtyard of the Peter Behrens Building as well as several floors of the neighbouring wing of Building C. The buildings are located in the Nord-Karree of the BE-U | Behrens-Ufer commercial district currently being developed by DIEAG between Ostendstrasse and Spreeufer in Berlin-Oberschöneweide. The first 200 jobs will be created here when ASML moves in. ASML Berlin is a strategic production, research and development location for
components for ASML lithography machines. New production technologies are being researched at the Behrens-Ufer site, key components for the lithography systems are being produced and young people are being trained in the company's own training workshop. During the ongoing development of the neighbourhood, ASML will be provided with a secure interim supply of cooling, heating and electricity by Gasag.
Robert Sprajcar, CEO and Chairman of the DIEAG Group, says: ‘Over the last 18 months, we have jointly developed around 13,000 square metres of space here. To do this, we have transformed a listed building into a high-tech site. Due to the complexity and the short time available, this really demanded everything from everyone involved. I would like to thank ASML, the general contractor Ed. Züblin and all the specialist plannersv who were involved. We are very proud that ASML decided in favour of the BE-U, because ASML embodies exactly the values that we also represent: Innovation, sustainability, openness to the world.’
Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, emphasises: ‘ASML is a key player in technological progress and digitalisation - in Berlin and worldwide. With its state-of-the-art lithography systems, ASML enables innovations ranging from AI to innovative medical technology. The move into the Behrens-Ufer technology quarter at our future location in Oberschöneweide underlines Berlin's role as a centre of innovation and creates future-proof jobs.’
Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Treptow-Köpenick, says: ‘After a long break, ASML's move and start of production on Behrens-Ufer continues the success story of Oberschöneweide as an industrial location. It is the starting Public signal for further important industrial settlements on Behrens-Ufer, which will revitalise the time-honoured history of this location and lead it into a modern era.’
Dr Markus Matthes, Managing Director of ASML in Berlin, says: ‘The semiconductor industry is expected to grow in the coming years as the demand for microchips continues to increase. As an important player in the semiconductor industry, ASML will also grow - worldwide and in Berlin, in order to meet the needs of chip manufacturers. Together with DIEAG and other partners, we have created a modern production facility, laboratories and offices here on Behrens-Ufer that offer our employees an attractive working environment and enable us to further develop and increase our research, development and production capacities.’
On the former industrial site of BE-U | Behrens-Ufer, which covers around ten hectares, a total of 235,000 square metres of rental space for businesses will be created in historic and new buildings, divided into three construction phases. Completion is planned for 2029.
