On the first floor of the new GASAG corporate headquarters on the EUREF campus, a new Fraunhofer Energy Research location was opened yesterday, June 29, 2021. “ENIQ – Energy Intelligence by Fraunhofer” sees itself as an interaction space that facilitates the transfer of knowledge. Stakeholders from business, politics, and society can discuss relevant topics with scientists, initiate projects, and create innovations. Event formats for different target groups are complemented by an exhibition area with changing innovative demonstrators and exhibits from Fraunhofer Energy Research.
“With ENIQ on the EUREF campus in Berlin-Schöneberg, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is taking a new approach to expanding the transfer of knowledge in energy research. We are thrilled with this successful facility, which has the potential to bring technical innovations even faster to the relevant target groups for the implementation of the energy transition,” says Andreas Feicht, State Secretary for Energy at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology on the occasion of the inauguration on June 29, 2021.
More than 2,000 employees at 20 Fraunhofer Institutes conduct research and development for a climate-neutral, secure, and equitable energy supply. This makes Fraunhofer Energy Research one of the largest energy research institutions in Europe.
“In order to bring the innovations of Fraunhofer Energy Research even more efficiently into application, a central platform is needed to bring together stakeholders from business, science, politics, and society to develop common needs and solutions for the energy transition,” says Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Infrastructure for knowledge transfer to Fraunhofer Energy Research
ENIQ has an infrastructure that brings together all the key players in the energy transition. The focus is on applied energy research and the technological and systemic solutions that Fraunhofer offers within this framework. Important topics are energy system issues, energy infrastructures, renewable energies, energy storage, energy efficiency, and the digitalization of the energy system.
With 1,250 sq m of space, ENIQ has two workshop rooms, three offices, a large open-air event space, an auditorium staircase, and an exhibition area. The infrastructure is designed for both larger and smaller events. In addition, there are digital demonstrators as well as technology exhibits that regularly change to flank the on-site events and provide a technology showcase for Fraunhofer Energy Research. Demonstrators on the topics of heat pumps, geothermal energy, photovoltaics, hydrogen technology, and interactive platforms on energy data were on display at the opening.
The activities at ENIQ result mainly from the research areas of Fraunhofer Energy Research. Numerous digital events have already taken place and are still on the agenda. The target groups are municipal utilities and energy suppliers, mobility providers, the financial sector, the construction and real estate industries, as well as academia, associations, and politicians at parliamentary and ministry level. Increasingly, on-site events are also possible, including a “Hydrogen Networking Day” and a matchmaking event with local companies on the EUREF campus planned for the fourth quarter.
