Topping-out ceremony for 120 new apartments in Berlin

The state-owned housing company Gewobag has celebrated the topping-out ceremony for three new residential buildings in the "Am Mühlenberg" housing complex on Meraner Straße in Berlin-Schöneberg. The existing settlement structure is being complemented by targeted densification, enhancing the neighborhood. The new buildings include one eight-story and two twelve-story residential towers, all featuring a distinctive Y-shaped layout. Completion is scheduled for Q2 2026.

“With the topping-out ceremony for the ‘Am Mühlenberg’ housing complex, we are taking another step toward sustainable and future-oriented living in Berlin. I would like to thank the construction workers and our project team,” said Malte Bädelt, Member of the Executive Board at Gewobag. “We look forward to welcoming the new residents next year and offering them a modern, comfortable, and affordable home.”

120 new apartments, 80% of which are subsidized

A total of 120 apartments are being built according to the KfW 55 energy efficiency standard, with living spaces ranging from approx. 43 sqm to 85 sqm. Of these, 80% are subsidized. In addition to apartments built for classic social housing programs (WBS 100 / WBS 140), this project will also offer many units for the WBS 160 and the new WBS 220.

“The housing offer is therefore also aimed at two-person households with a monthly net income of up to €3,465. These households can apply for the corresponding new housing entitlement certificate (Wohnberechtigungsschein) at the local citizen or housing office – also online,” explains Malte Bädelt.

Open structures and green spaces for a livable neighborhood

The complex, embedded in expansive green areas and surrounded by mature trees, features open development and is accessed via small side streets like Steinacher Straße and Am Mühlenberg. As part of the densification effort, the outdoor areas will be redesigned with attractive play and relaxation spaces for residents.

To promote bicycle use in the neighborhood, 75 additional bicycle parking spaces will be created in the outdoor areas, including spaces for cargo bikes. Furthermore, two charging stations for electric vehicles will be installed on the three upgraded parking areas, which now offer 96 enhanced parking spaces.

Another focus is the renovation of the entrance area of the existing high-rise at Meraner Str. 33, along with the renewal of the building’s energy and heating connections. Additionally, two spaces for child day care providers (Tagesmütter) and two commercial units will be created.
