Visualization M50 – The Macherei Berlin-Kreuzberg

Topping-out ceremony for the M50 in Berlin-Kreuzberg

Following the successful gutting and partial demolition of the former post office cheque office, the completion of the final building ceiling and the installation of the façade, project developer Art-Invest Real Estate celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the M50 in the Die Macherei Berlin-Kreuzberg on 10 September.

Sustainable high-rise with modern usage

One of Germany's most climate-friendly high-rise buildings is being created here on approximately 35,000 square metres of gross floor space above ground thanks to the ecological revitalisation of the former office tower. In addition to resource-saving renovation and various building modernisations, Art-Invest Real Estate is also installing a 764-square-metre façade PV system, which will generate electricity locally and thus offset a large part of future CO2 emissions.

In addition to optimal new work conditions thanks to flexible room concepts, the plans for the M50 include a large selection of spacious meeting and co-working areas as well as a skylounge on the roof offering a 270-degree view of Berlin. This will be complemented by additional amenities on the ground floor of the building, such as restaurants and commercial units for everyday needs.

Voices from politics and project development

The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner: "Berlin is building! At one of Berlin's most famous high-rise buildings, the Postscheckamt in Kreuzberg, the combination of the commercial buildings in Macherei Berlin-Kreuzberg and the residential development by our state-owned housing association degewo is creating a modern and sustainable urban quarter that fits in very well with Berlin. The new quarter is characterised by energy-efficient construction and a climate-friendly, car-free design – thus contributing to the attractiveness of our city."

Lena Brühne, Managing Director and Head of the Berlin branch of Art-Invest Real Estate, said: "With the topping-out ceremony, we have reached another milestone in the revitalisation of the former Postscheckamt. From the very beginning, this project has always been associated with responsibility for us – towards Berlin and, above all, towards the next generation.

As an architectural eye-catcher in the capital, the M50 also sends a powerful signal for circular and resource-efficient construction: it is thus exemplary for a sustainable future in construction. Thank you to Eike Becker Architects and to all the people who, in all weathers, in small and large ways, are bringing this project to life."

A neighborhood with history and future

Dr Markus Wiedenmann, CEO of Art-Invest Real Estate: "Together with degewo and the district, we seized the opportunity and developed a new concept for the site. From the outset, our goal was to create more than just another construction project: today, we can already see the results. Buildings M40 and M60 are complete. They house offices, restaurants, a large REWE supermarket and, thanks to degewo, 337 new apartments. Life has moved in. I would also like to thank our banks and investors, who have placed their trust in this project and thus made the financial framework for its implementation possible. The Macherei Berlin-Kreuzberg is thus proving to be a place that respects history, enlivens the present and takes the future seriously, where diversity, everyday life and future orientation flow into one another."

Eike Becker, architect and founder of the Eike Becker Architekten office, Berlin: "The former Postscheckamt is one of Berlin's most striking high-rise buildings. Equipped with a light-flooded reception building, a sports field on the roof, a photovoltaic system and a viewing terrace at a height of 90 metres, we are giving Berliners back one of their landmarks, fit for the future."
