At Bohnsdorfer Weg, the state-owned housing company degewo today celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the “Quartier der Vielfalt” (“Neighborhood of Diversity”) together with Berlin’s State Secretary for Housing and Tenant Protection, Stephan Machulik, the District Mayor of Treptow-Köpenick, Oliver Igel, and project partner BATEG. By 2027, a total of 462 rental apartments, a daycare center for up to 100 children, and five commercial units will be built here. On approximately 5.5 hectares of land, a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood is emerging for around 1,500 people with diverse housing needs.
“In the Quartier der Vielfalt at Bohnsdorfer Weg, structural and social measures are intelligently interlinked,” said Berlin’s State Secretary for Housing and Tenant Protection, Stephan Machulik. “This creates a new home for many people with a high quality of life and strong social cohesion. degewo is not only creating urgently needed affordable housing here, but is also building sustainably and with a future-oriented approach.”
The new neighborhood includes a diverse range of housing options: 243 of the 462 apartments are publicly subsidized, while the remaining units are privately financed. Another 42 apartments are designated for assisted living — for people with mental health conditions or learning difficulties, for example. In the first construction phase, a modular housing facility with 58 apartments for refugees was also completed.
Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Berlin Treptow-Köpenick, praised the inclusive approach: “degewo is creating a place for everyone — from young families to people in need of support to refugees. With the daycare center and barrier-free housing, the social infrastructure of our district is being specifically strengthened.”
Climate and environmental protection also play a key role in the neighborhood. Almost all buildings are being constructed using sustainable timber hybrid methods. The entire area will feature a large green corridor, and the buildings will be equipped with green roofs and façades as well as photovoltaic systems for the generation of renewable energy.
Sandra Wehrmann, Member of the Executive Board at degewo, stated: “Here we are combining our social mission with ambitious climate protection goals. The Quartier der Vielfalt stands for affordable, inclusive, and at the same time ecologically responsible living in Berlin.”
Nevzat Köstek, Managing Partner of BATEG GmbH, added: “With the modern timber hybrid buildings, we are creating a sustainable living environment with a high quality of stay — for today and future generations. We are pleased to once again realize a forward-looking project together with degewo.”
With the “Quartier der Vielfalt,” degewo is sending a strong signal for social, diverse, and climate-conscious urban development — in one of Berlin’s fastest-growing districts.
