WISTA and Artprojekt: Cooperation for global nutrition

Artprojekt and WISTA Management GmbH, a state-owned company for innovative site development and economic promotion, have agreed on a cooperation regarding the Food Campus Berlin. WISTA will develop an incubator for FoodTech start-ups within the campus. A corresponding contract has now been signed.

40,000 square meters of innovation space at the Teltow Canal

The Food Campus Berlin is an innovation hub for the future of food and planetary health solutions, conceptualized, developed, and realized by the Artprojekt Group. Located on a 14,000 square meter site at the Teltow Canal in Berlin-Tempelhof, it will offer 40,000 square meters of usable space after completion, providing room for start-ups, research, science, and industry to accelerate the sustainable transformation of food production.

WISTA develops a Smart Protein Hub on 4,000 square meters

WISTA, which also operates Germany's largest technology park in Berlin-Adlershof, will develop and operate a unique Smart Protein Hub & Makerspace on approximately 4,000 square meters within the Food Campus Berlin. These spaces will include high-tech laboratories, a sensory room, a show kitchen, co-working spaces, and showrooms. Here, FoodTech start-ups will be able to rent spaces and infrastructure to research and develop sustainable proteins based on cells or plants.

Future perspectives and international expansion

“With the WISTA incubator Smart Protein Hub & Makerspace on the Food Campus Berlin, we are bringing our long-standing experience in collaborating with high-tech companies and creating laboratory infrastructure, enabling start-ups to develop products for sustainable nutrition and thus reduce CO2 emissions. I am pleased that, on behalf of the state of Berlin, we can make an important contribution to the future of food,” said Roland Sillmann, Managing Director of WISTA Management GmbH.

“The implementation of the WISTA Smart Protein Hub & Makerspace into the campus ecosystem is a very important step. This will establish the Food Campus Berlin as a significant location for the future of food and planetary health solutions, and it will position itself as a hub for FoodTech innovations in Germany,” said Lia Carlucci, Managing Director of Food Campus Berlin at Artprojekt Group.

With potentially 1,500 jobs for professionals in the food industry, the Food Campus Berlin will become an  important economic factor for Berlin.

“Our goal is to bring together the key players along the value chain under one roof and establish the Food Campus Berlin as an international center for food innovation. Construction is scheduled to at the turn of 2024/25 with completion in 2026,” explaines Hanns Kastner, Managing Director of Real Estate at Artprojekt Group.

International expansion and global perspectives

In addition to the Berlin site, an international roll-out is being planned. “The challenges of planetary health must be addressed on a global scale. We are currently in talks for sites in Rwanda, Singapore, and the MENA region, and are conducting feasibility studies for these international campuses,” explained Dr. Alexandra von Stosch, Managing Director and spokesperson of Artprojekt Group.
