Food Campus Berlin: Rethinking and shaping the future of food production

The climate crisis, population growth, and biodiversity loss are among the most pressing issues of our time. People's healthy nutrition and the preservation of the planet's ecosystems are critical tasks for future generations to have a future worth living in. This is where the Food Campus Berlin comes in, with the goal of collaboratively rethinking and shaping the future of food production.

“The food market demands innovative products that are good for people and good for the planet. The real estate market demands sustainable buildings. The fact that we are exceptionally well-equipped with know-how in both sectors is a significant advantage," says Thomas Hölzel, founder, owner and Managing Partner of Artprojekt Entwicklungen GmbH, about the visionary project. “Our campus will be a showcase for the world of future food and a place where food is considered a culinary heritage,” Hölzel continues. "Our campus will be a showcase for the world of future food, as well as a place where food is considered a culinary heritage," Hölzel adds.

With the Food Campus Berlin, Artprojekt has been developing one of the most innovative real estate projects in Berlin for around a year and a half. A six-story innovation and industry center for the future of nutrition and climate protection will be built on a 14,000 square meter site directly on the Teltow canal in Tempelhof-Schöneberg.

The approximately 40,000 square meter floor area of the building is divided into office space, open production areas, laboratories, R&D departments, and test kitchens, as well as community areas for urban farming and events. A canteen that meets the most recent innovation and nutritional standards is also planned for the approximately 1,000 people who will populate the Food Campus Berlin.

The campus was designed with future-oriented and sustainable aspects in mind. For example, LEED Platinum certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is being sought for the buildings in accordance with the standards of the USGBC (US Green Building Council), which is integrated into the auditing according to ESG criteria. Along with this, regenerative energy generation installations such as geothermal energy and photovoltaics are being implemented. The structural shell in office areas will be built using a wood hybrid construction method. The resulting reduction in carbon footprint will be incorporated into the life cycle assessment, which will evaluate the entire construction and subsequent operation life cycle.

The building application for the Food Campus was submitted at the end of October 2021. The groundbreaking is scheduled for spring 2022, with the project set to open in early 2024. The majority of the buildings will be sold to investors, but Artprojekt will curate and manage their content after they are completed.

The campus takes a holistic approach. In the field of tension between planetary health, regionality, digitization and food crafts, scientists, food technologists, chefs, farmers, and food artisans, food nerds and technologists work hand in hand on concepts for the people of today and the world of tomorrow. Collaborations with universities connect campus members with researchers and talent.

As a center for interdisciplinary exchange, research and networking, solutions are developed and made visible and tangible in the Food Campus Berlin. The Food Campus Berlin community not only shares its knowledge, but also laboratories, production facilities and test kitchens. Start-up ideas and concepts are scaled and made tangible for the public. Established companies will find ideal conditions and the right spirit for their own lighthouse projects, spin-offs and bold incubator programs.

With Jörg Reuter, Artprojekt was able to secure a renowned food industry pioneer for the management of Artprojekt Nature & Nutrition GmbH at the beginning of 2021. Over the last two decades, the strategist has advised well-known trading companies and brand manufacturers in Germany and Switzerland with the goal of bringing organic products out of the niche and making them successful. At the Food Campus, he is now in charge of its content conception and curation. “The enthusiasm for the Campus idea is overwhelming and has more than confirmed our concept,” says Jörg Reuter, Managing Director of Artprojekt Nature & Nutrition GmbH.

An eleven-member advisory board consisting of experts, founders, and scientists supports Jörg Reuter in developing the content of the Food Campus Berlin. The members come from the food industry, research, the founder scene and nature conservation and will enrich the rapidly growing Food Campus community with their international networks. In addition to the Berlin Food Campus, further Food Campuses are planned in Germany, Europe and abroad.
