Issue 08/2024 | Battery Technology from Berlin-Brandenburg - A Motor for the Energy Transformation

Schoenefeld, August 20, 2024

Dear readers,

Berlin-Brandenburg is increasingly becoming a center for innovative battery technologies that drives electromobility and energy transformation. Two outstanding examples illustrate the region's potential: Berlin-based start-up theion has achieved a breakthrough in the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. This technology not only offers three times the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries at a significantly lower cost, but also solves the dendrite problem that has previously compromised the safety and longevity of batteries. Theion's batteries are particularly suitable for aviation and could establish the region as a leading location for high-performance batteries.

At the same time, Berlin-based Terra One is setting new standards in sustainable energy storage. With $7.5 million in seed funding, the startup plans to bring to market large-scale battery storage systems that are critical to the stability and efficiency of the power grid. These storage solutions enable the intelligent use of excess energy and feed it back into the grid when needed, making a significant contribution to grid stability and supporting the energy transition.

With over 33 companies and 9 research institutes, the region is already ideally positioned to play a leading role in the global battery industry. Berlin-Brandenburg is proving once again that it is not only an important center for research and development, but also a place where visionary ideas become market-ready products. Whether in electromobility or energy storage, our region is a driver of innovation and a key player on the road to a sustainable future.

You can find out more about the two companies mentioned above in the corresponding articles in this issue. Moreover, you can read how a Berlin biotech company is enjoying international success with innovative enzymes and antibodies, and how the billion-euro investment in Brandenburg by Amazon Web Services (AWS) is strengthening the digital infrastructure and creating thousands of jobs. As always, you will also find news about BER Airport and the development of real estate projects in the region.

We hope you enjoy reading!
