Lakeward lays cornerstone for new construction project “Ferdinand’s Garden” in Berlin-Lichtenberg

Ferdinand’s Garden is located in the East Berlin district of Lichtenberg, which has seen steady population growth for years due to continued influx from Berlin’s more expensive central districts. The significant development potential of the region offers Lakeward the opportunity to gain a foothold in the location with a large residential real estate portfolio. The development includes 395 functional and affordable housing units with average and solid finishing standards and 79 rent-controlled units. Move-in is planned for the end of 2023.

Lakeward places great emphasis on support from local communities and authorities. District City Councilor Kevin Hönicke explains: “We need attractive places to live and live well that are affordable to a broad swath of the population. Among other things, this construction project will create 199 barrier-free apartments and quite a few bicycle parking facilities adjacent to Berlin’s city center. Even as construction prices rise and land becomes scarcer, we welcome any contribution to maintaining the social mix and development in our district.”

Marko Lehmann, Technical Manager, Region East of PORR GmbH & Co KGaA: “Lakeward’s goal is to drive the ‘Environmental Social Governance’ (ESG) theme in this project. We want to support this project and actively participate as a company, which is why we have developed this project in a partnering process in cooperation with the client and the other specialist planners. In a partnership approach and on an equal footing with all parties involved, the team succeeded in projecting a modern, responsible and sustainable development in the district of Lichtenberg, which we are now able to realize in the role of general contractor.”

Simon Koenig, Founder and CEO of Lakeward: “Together with our partners, we are realizing a new, lively residential neighborhood in an excellent location. Daycare centers, playgrounds, green courtyards, and green roofs also add value to the immediate surroundings. Our groundbreaking today marks the start of urban and sophisticated yet affordable housing and will further strengthen Lichtenberg as a residential, living, and working district of Berlin.”

The region offers excellent green recreational areas with the Herzberge Landscape Park and Lake Orankesee. The parks are not only ideal for walking and jogging, but also offer large playgrounds for families with children. Other advantages include the popular “Allee-Center Berlin” for shopping and the immediate vicinity of the Sportforum Berlin, the second largest sports facility in the capital and center of Berlin’s competitive sports. There are 35 sports facilities available on the approximately 45-hectare site, which are used for top-level, junior, and competitive sports as well as for popular sports.
